Russia & France Issue Joint Declaration on Arctic Research
Rosbalt News Posted June 4, 2003
MOSCOW, June 2. Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Jacques Chirac adopted a joint declaration on Arctic research during St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary celebrations. According to the Russian president's press office, the declaration states that: 'Russia and France believe that protecting the planet's aboriginal people is an important part of sustainable development and environmental protection policies, to which both countries attach great significance. The Russian and French authorities are delighted by the development of St. Petersburg's State Polar Academy, which received new premises in the run up to St. Petersburg's tercentenary, and are committed to continuing their cooperation. They express their support for the State Polar Academy in Russia and the Center for Arctic Research and National Museum of Natural History - Jean Malory Polar Foundation in France. They support their attempts to develop scientific and university exchanges which help to create a common space for higher education and scientific research between Russia and France.'
Russia and France also place great significance on the implementation of programmes for preparing staff for the Polar Academy's base in the extreme north of Russia. The programmes are supported by the French Foreign Ministry. These programmes form part of a privileged partnership that both countries are developing in the spheres of administrative cooperation and state reform.
