Most exciting are the grizzlies, found in larger, more accessible numbers here than perhaps anywhere else on Earth! Your guides have located the very best grizzly bear viewing rivers in all of Canada. By Expedition Ship: These ships were built with tourists and true exploration in mind; they range from simple to comfortable, but are not luxurious. Most have shallow drafts and ice-hardened hulls to push through sea ice. They feature Zodiacs for exploration and shore landings. Onboard programs are educational with a focus on natural and cultural history.

The coastline of southeast Alaska and British Columbia is a rare and special place, blending spectacular natural beauty with distinctive cultural influences. It is an incredible maze of fjords, channels, rivers and glaciers that glide towards the sea. Speckled here and there are small hamlets inhabited by proud, independent people, blending a myriad of traditions from Native American to Russian and Scandinavian. This majestic region of narrow protected waterways is ideally suited for our nimble 70-guest expedition ship, the Sea Bird. Enjoy an in-depth exploration of the coastal wilderness between Seattle, Washington and Glacier Bay, Alaska.

By Motor Yacht: These ships tend to hold no more than 30 passengers. Always comfortable and often luxurious, motor yachts are perfect for family and group charters. Many have sea kayaks and sometimes Zodiacs. There is usually one naturalist/expedition leader, a captain, cook and a deck hand onboard.

It’s calm in Icy Strait, one of Alaska’s most beautiful glacial fjords. When you board the Zodiac launch to putter among the icebergs here, you’re putting yourself at sensory level with some of nature’s most amazing secrets. In the still water, you hear a popping like that of puffed-rice cereal — it’s ice decompressing and expanding after centuries of being crushed by its own glacial weight. Go ahead, reach out your hands and gather a fistful of geological history. Your own eyes are wide, but on a nearby floe there’s a harbor seal watching you with even wider eyes that are as shiny as black silk.
